Loudspeaker design, test and measurement: an evening with Geoff Hill

19 April 2022 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm Zoom

Loudspeaker expert Geoff Hill takes us on an informal journey through a lifetime’s experience in the industry, sharing real-world successes, failures and insights, and discussing his approaches to the design, modelling and testing of loudspeakers. We’ll explore his recent Routledge book “Loudspeaker Modelling and Design: A Practical Introduction” and of course the Tetrahedral Test Chamber for which he is justly well-known.

Biography

Geoff Hill, loudspeaker engineer, author, and inventor of the Tetrahedral Test Chamber (TTC), and CTO at Hill Acoustics, has been working in the loudspeaker and audio industry for more than 40 years. He co-founded Impulse Acoustics in 1979, his first foray into the world of professional audio design and manufacturing, focusing on horn loudspeakers and amplifier design. In 1985 he moved to Bowers & Wilkins as Production Test Engineer and shortly after to Goodmans Loudspeakers where he was Development Engineer for 13 years, designing primarily hi-fi loudspeaker drivers and complete systems. After a short stint as Senior Acoustic Engineer for Wharfedale, Geoff Hill was hired by Ericsson as Senior Acoustic Engineer, from where he moved to Motorola, to design, build and implement a multi-user Acoustic Measurement Laboratory and large anechoic chamber for telecommunication products. In 2005 he returned to the world of speakers as Senior Acoustic Engineer for Monitor Audio, Ltd., where for nearly six years he modernized the test and measurement facilities and equipment, designed, and installed an anechoic chamber and led research efforts. In 2013, after working as technical director for other loudspeaker companies and continuing to offer technical support on the design and testing of loudspeakers, he founded his own consultancy business, Hill Acoustics.

Geoff Hill is the vice-chair of the Audio Engineering Society’s AES SC-04-03 Working Group on loudspeaker modelling and measurement and a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC Working Group TC 100/TA 20/PT 60268-22.  Hill is also the author of the book Loudspeaker Modelling and Design: A Practical Introduction (Routledge 2018). Also many of his articles have been published in Audioxpress.
