Improving Speech-in-Noise Perception with Auditory-Inspired Machine Learning by Dr Tobias Goehring

For people who use hearing aids or cochlear implants to compensate for their hearing loss, speech perception becomes very challenging in noisy situations. This talk examines innovative approaches to tackle this problem by restoring the speech signal with pre-processing algorithms based on machine learning and computational auditory models. Biography Dr Tobias Goehring is a Senior Research Associate at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, University of Cambridge, UK. He conducts research to improve the perception of sound by hard-of-hearing people with hearing aids and cochlear implants. His focus lies on understanding speech in noisy situations.  Tobias earned his PhD as an EU Marie Curie Fellow at the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, followed by a post-doc in cochlear implant research at the University of Cambridge, UK, and Macquarie University, Australia. Originally from Germany, Tobias holds a Dipl.-Ing. in Electrical Engineering and worked as an R&D Engineer in the automotive industry before his transition to medical hearing research in 2013.
