Institute of Acoustics’ Reproduced Sound conference – discount for AES members

The Institute of Acoustics’ Reproduced Sound 2011 conference is being held in Brighton from 16-18 November. As many AES members will know, Reproduced Sound is a well-established, long-running event in the audio and acoustic calendars. Probably more than any other event, it relates the disciplines of audio technology and room acoustics, from theoretical research to practical installation and commissioning.

Throughout its 27-year history, Reproduced Sound has been co-supported by the AES, ISCE, ABTT and APRS.  This year is no exception and AES members in particular will find many topics of interest to them. These include: Wave field synthesis in ITU listening rooms; Designing with the cinema X-curve; Broadcast audio for sporting events; Reflection design of control rooms; High power and high quality audio systems for speech and music in major sports venues, and Electro-acoustic enhancement systems for live music production.

The conference banquet on Thursday evening will be followed by an in-depth and hands-on demonstration of a full Meyer Sound Constellation electro-acoustic rig, with delegates encouraged to make their own adjustments, as well as to bring their own musical instruments.

AES Members qualify for a £50 discount on the registration fee. There are also substantial discounts for students on accredited courses. Full details of the programme and how to book can be found here.

Speakers confirmed for inaugural AES Scotland meeting

The line-up of speakers for the first AES Scotland meeting – to be held on Thursday 15th September at Glasgow Caledonian University – has now been confirmed.

Cameron Malcolm, son of the legendary Scottish producer/engineer Calum Malcolm, and Paul Ferguson from Edinburgh Napier University will provide insights into the design process behind the recently-opened Glasgow studio, Gorbals Sound. Following Cameron and Paul, Patrick Quinn from Glasgow Caledonian University – the evening’s host – will give a short talk about audio education in Scotland.

The evening kicks-off at 5.30pm with refreshments and networking, and the proceedings start at 6pm with a welcome from AES Scotland chair Elena Prokofieva, John David Moore of Glasgow Caledonian University and Bill Foster, chair of the AES British Section. At the end of the main presentations, attendees will be invited to suggest topics for future lectures and events. It is also hoped to elect a committee to run these. Finally, a further opportunity to network before the evening wraps up around 8pm.

This meeting is open to everyone with an interest in professional audio, not just AES members. We hope to see you there!

Technical Visit to NEP Visions’ Gemini 1 OB Truck

Title: Technical Visit to NEP Visions’ Gemini 1 OB Truck
Location: NEP Visions, Staines, Middlesex
Description: A look inside Gemini 1 with its two audio control rooms
Start Time: 14:00
Date: Thursday 14th April 2011

Due to cancellations we still have some places available.

We have secured a rare opportunity to see inside NEP Visions’ newest OB truck, Gemini 1. This has been built specifically to cater for Sky’s Premiership matches and it features not one but two larger than normal audio control rooms, each equipped with a Calrec Apollo 56-fader console. NEP Visions staff will be on hand to conduct the tour, along with a representative from Calrec and, we hope, one of the sound engineers who mixes the 5.1 audio for Sky’s Premiership matches.

Places on this tour are only available to AES members and are very limited. To reserve yours send an e-mail to tech-visits[at]aes-uk.org via this link.  [Please note: We had some temporary difficulties with this e-mail address on Monday 21st/Tuesday 22nd March. If you sent an e-mail to us then and it bounced, please can you please resend it. Thank you.]

A4V: Audio for Visuals symposium: Final programme now online

The programme is now complete for A4V: Audio for Visuals, the AES UK Section’s one-day symposium aimed at audio engineers seeking to broaden their horizons and students wishing to get a flavour of the wide range of visuals-related disciplines that make up today’s audio industry.

A4V will cover the many aspects of sound for pictures, with presentations from a diverse range of experienced practitioners in their fields.

The distinguished group of audio engineers speaking at this event includes Scott Talbott, head of BBC Studios and Post Production’s sound team, who will give a presentation on Audio for Live TV, Ian Rosam of Video Sound Services, one of the engineers responsible for Sky Sports’ Premiership coverage, Ray Gillon, a film sound mixer, editor, producer and director with a track record spanning more than 25 years, and Toby Alington, TV sound engineer on the annual BRIT Awards and for several live events to cinemas such as Take That from the O2 Arena.

Other areas to be covered include sound design for games, the restoration of archive material and maintaining audio/video synch in a broadcast environment. The day will open with a keynote by Tim Carroll, CEO of Linear Acoustics.

A4V: Audio for Visuals takes place on Saturday 5th February 2011 in the state-of-the-art digital cinema of the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, starting at 9.00am and finishing at 5.30pm.

For more information about the event, the full programme and details of how to register, please visit the A4V: Audio for Visuals web page.

Special Lecture with Neville Thiele – Tuesday 24th November, 2009

Click here for audio recording and report of this lecture

An excellent Tutorial by Neville Thiele can be found here

Neville Thiele’s name is known to anyone who has ever taken an interest in the practical design of moving coil loudspeakers, through the Thiele-Small parameters that bear his name and that of Richard Small. In 1961 he wrote a seminal paper on the design of vented (reflex) loudspeakers that – although it was largely ignored for 10 years until reproduced in the AES Journal – is now acknowledged as initiating the filter parameter based approach to loudspeaker analysis and synthesis which today is routinely used by the audio industry at large. In recognition of this, in 1994 he was awarded the AES Silver Medal.

In this interview-based lecture, Neville Thiele will talk about what led up to this breakthrough and its significance to the speaker design process. He will then give three short presentations on loudspeaker-related topics: filter-assisted bass alignments and novel crossover approaches; driver ageing effects; and driver impedance correction in crossover networks. Questions will then be invited from the audience.

The lecture is open to all, 18:30 for 19:00 start, and will be held at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London.
